23 May Saracens pooled with Sharks in World Club 10s Mauritius
Newly crowned European champions Saracens drawn with Top 14 holders Stade Francais Paris, South Africa’s Cell C Sharks and Asia Pacific Dragons in Pool B of June’s two-day showdown in ‘paradise island’
May 19, 2016: Reigning English champion Saracens will face Top 14 holders Stade Francais Paris in Pool B of the World Club 10s in Mauritius, which will be held at Anjalay Stadium in Mauritius from June 18-19.
Saracens, the newly crowned European champions, will also face South Africa’s Cell C Sharks, one of the event’s three Super Rugby franchises, and Asia Pacific Dragons, an invitational side who finished third at the inaugural World Club 10s in Singapore two years ago.
Australian Super Rugby franchises Aquis Brumbies and Western Force were drawn together in Pool A, along with three-time European champions RC Toulon of France and the Italian All Stars, who will be made up of players from six Italian clubs.
Jon Phelps, Managing Director of tournament organiser Carinat Sports Marketing, said: “We have an exciting set of pool matches scheduled for the opening day of the World Club 10s. Toulon against Brumbies is an amazing kick off for the tournament, while it will be great to see the Aussie showdown between Brumbies and Force.
“The Pool B clash between Saracens and Stade, last year’s French and English champions, also looks tasty, and they’ll both face Sharks in a clash of north-south styles. The Asia Pacific Dragons and Italian All Stars are invitational sides, but the APDs did well in this event two years ago, while the Italians will be drawn from six clubs and feature Italian and international players, so could also surprise other teams.”
The Brumbies and the Asia Pacific Dragons both return from the first World Club 10s two years ago in Singapore, where they finished second and third respectively. The Italian All Stars effectively succeed Italian club Petrarca, who also played two years ago.
The Honourable Yogida Sawmynaden, Minister of Youth and Sports, said: “We’re so proud to bring an event as prestigious as the World Club 10s to Mauritius. We encourage everyone to support the matches, as is the first time that we’ve hosted world-class rugby teams and players in our paradise island.”
Kevin Venkiah, President of Rugby Union Mauritius (RUM), added: “I’m delighted to see the World Club 10s coming to life. RUM has worked closely with the organisers to make this world-class event happen and is grateful to Carinat for bringing the competition to Mauritius.”
The World Club 10s will crown a week-long rugby festival also featuring amateur clubs, universities, women’s teams and age-group sides competing in supporting events. All of the finals of the supporting tournaments will be held at the main 16,000-capacity Anjalay Stadium on Sunday, June 19.
The 2016 World Club 10s is sponsored by Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, Beachcomber Hotels, Air Mauritius, Emtel, Pepsi, MC Vision, Ciel Group, Impact Productions, BRM (official watch), Samurai (official ball), City Sport, Otayo, Tropic Knits and Fortis Clinique Darné.

About World Club 10s
Owned and organised by Carinat Sports Marketing, the World Club 10s is an eight-team, 10-a-side invitational rugby tournament featuring leading professional teams from around the world. The second edition will be held at the 16,000-capacity Anjalay Stadium in Mauritius from June 18-19, 2016. Participating clubs comprise Cell C Sharks (South Africa), Aquis Brumbies and Western Force (Australia), RC Toulon and Stade Francais Paris (France), Saracens (England), Italian All Stars and Asia Pacific Dragons. The tournament features two round-robin pools of four on the Saturday and 12 knockout matches on the Sunday, so each team plays six 20-minute matches over the weekend. Sponsors include Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, Beachcomber Hotels, Air Mauritius, Emtel, Pepsi and MC Vision. The first World Club 10s was held in Singapore in June 2014 and was the first international sports event to be staged in the newly opened 55,000-seat National Stadium at the Singapore Sports Hub. The Blues (New Zealand) won the final by beating Brumbies (Australia) 10-5 after extra-time. Other teams came from France, England, Wales, Italy, Samoa and Asia-Pacific.
