12 Jun TALENTED BOK TOURIST SMIT TO MAKE COMEBACK AT BEACHCOMBER 10s
PRETORIA, JUNE 1, 2017 – Springbok tourist Roelof Smit is set to make his rugby comeback at the Beachcomber World Club 10s tournament in Mauritius in June after a frustrating time on the sidelines.
Smit, who was impressive for the Vodacom Blue Bulls in last year’s Currie Cup, was chosen to tour Britain and Italy with the Springboks last November.
He made has international debut against the Barbarians at Wembley and was set to make his Test debut against England at Twickenham a week later. But a torn bicep, sustained against the Barbarians, put his Test ambitions on hold.
It’s been a trying seven months for the hard-working openside flank to return to full fitness, and the Beachcomber 10s at the Anjalay Stadium on June 17 and 18 offers the 24-year-old a great opportunity to get some much-needed game time.
He has been included in the Vodacom Bulls team for the tournament, which pits eight top class professional teams against each other over 2 days of intense, but fun competition.
Unfortunately regular Bulls skipper Hanro Liebenberg won’t make the trip to Mauritius after sustaining an ankle injury during the last round of Super Rugby.
But the 23-times Currie Cup and three-time Super Rugby champions will still send a formidable squad to Mauritius, which includes giant lock RG Snyman, who also toured with the Springboks in 2016.
The Vodacom Bulls and Toyota Cheetahs from South Africa, the Plus 500 Brumbies and the Road Safety Western Force from Australia, Harlequins from England, Kubota Spears from Japan, a combined Tsunami Pyrenees from France and a composite Africa Pacific Dragons team will all be in action.
The Beachcomber World Club 10s is fully sanctioned by World Rugby, Rugby Afrique and Rugby Union Mauritius.
